GRAVATOM SUPPORTS KEY STAGE IN WINDSCALE DECOMMISSIONING

Gravatom has assisted Sellafield Ltd in a core contract to provide project management support for a key stage in the Windscale Advanced Gas Cooled Reactor (WAGR) Post Irradiation Examination (PIE) Facility decommissioning programme.

The nine month contract, completed in September, enabled progress in this ongoing work to be made in the retrieval and encapsulation of Intermediate Level Waste (ILW) located in shielded caves within the building. This challenging project required:

• An engineered solution for the retrieval and encapsulation of the waste
• A safety case
• Agreement of the waste forms in a letter of compliance issued by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority Radioactive Waste Management Directorate
(formerly NIREX)

The contract forms part of the Windscale Western Area Decommissioning Design Framework Agreement. Under this agreement, Gravatom is required to support the Windscale site in mechanical, electrical and instrumentation engineering design disciplines. This covers activities such as preparing specifications, undertaking design and site surveys, production of drawings, supporting options, HAZOP studies and project management.

Keith Cuthell, Project Engineer, said: “This was a very challenging package of work. The contract was originally undertaken for a three month period and was extended at the request of the client. Continuing success in projects like this on the Windscale and Sellafield sites can only enhance our good reputation, allowing us the opportunity to win more work.”
